Since 1953 Miss England has captivated the nation by not just being a beauty contest, but standing for the trademark of the country, while raising thousands of pounds for the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ charity that supports underprivileged children worldwide.

As part of the Miss World’s “Beauty with a Purpose” initiative, every year the Miss England competition supports various charities at regional and national events. The contestant raising the most funds in the contest will be recognised for her efforts and announced as the Beauty with a Purpose winner.

The Charity car wash day is just one of events Miss Sussex is organizing to raise money. Local businessman Robbie Raggio is supporting the event and handing over his car wash for the day to Miss Sussex and her girls who will be at the car wash all day collecting, there will be a huge amount of local press coverage and of course her sponsors will be giving away free stuff all day! Come down and join in the fun, get your car washed and donate!

All money donated goes to Beauty with a Purpose

In the run up to the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival’s ‘Spring Harvest’ in April, local primary school pupils were invited to get creative and design a pizza that represents Brighton. Over 600 entries were received with the final three on sale at Donatello during the festival. The winner on a public vote was the Seafood Special featuring mozzarella, tomato and mackerel by Leo Simpson, shown here with festival committee member Andrew Kay, Sue Addis of Donatello and Analiese Doctrove of Rockinghorse. Leo’s pizza will be on the menu at Donatello from late May, with a donation from every sale to Rockinghorse children’s charity.

The world’s oldest operating aquarium re-opens Sunday, May 13th after a six-month closure and £2 million-plus refurbishment.

The redevelopment of Brighton Sea Life Centre has restored much of its original splendour …just in time to celebrate its 140th anniversary.

As well as the careful repair and restoration of delicate carvings and ornate Victorian architecture, owner Merlin Entertainments has also invested in new ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘jellyfish’ attractions.

“For the first time in its long history we will be allowing visitors into the warren of corridors and ante-rooms previously hidden from the public gaze,” said General Manager Max Leviston.

“They will see the complex life-support systems that help keep our thousands of creatures fit and healthy; our breeding and research facilities and our food preparation room, and they will hear about the work that goes on in each.

“And we will also be unveiling Jellyfish Discovery, a spectacular new exhibition focusing on these ancient and primitive creatures which are among the most resilient and most mysterious in the marine world.”

Many of the Centre’s resident creatures were moved out when work began last October, to holding facilities in London and Weymouth, while others were relocated to new temporary tanks in the auditorium above the mighty ocean tank.

These assorted native and tropical fish will be moving back in stages over the next few weeks, including a shoal of cow-nosed rays and giant Japanese spider crabs.

Max and his staff will not be the only ones happy to see visitors enjoying the displays again after what has been the longest closure since Merlin acquired and redeveloped the Brighton Aquarium in 1991.

Giant green turtles Lulu and Gulliver and loggerhead turtle Jersey, three of the biggest and oldest sea turtles in captivity, have also missed their legions of human admirers.

“That may be because we allow visitors to help with feeding them,” said curator Carey Duckhouse, “but I also think they enjoy people-watching almost as much as visitors enjoy watching them.”

Brighton Aquarium first opened its door at Easter in 1872 for a surprise visit from Prince Arthur, third son of Queen Victoria, who was Duke of Connaught and Strathearn and the Earl of Sussex.

The Prince had to content himself with a tour of a facility not yet graced with either tanks or fish, which were not in place until the official opening ceremony on August 10th of the same year.

Designed by Eugenius Birch, who also designed the West Pier, the original aquarium was built at a cost of £130,000…equivalent to about £7 million today.

Former inhabitants have included penguins, sea lions, crocodiles and of course dolphins…the last two of which, Missie and Silver, were returned to the wild in the Caribbean soon after the present owners took over.

The attraction was not always as popular and successful as it is today, and in fact went into voluntary liquidation in 1896…a year short of its 25th anniversary.

The local authority finally bought it in 1901 and ran it for nearly 40 more years. During that time it closed again in 1927 for renovations which took two years to complete.

Occupied by the armed forces during the Second World War…most of the resident creatures were transferred to London Zoo.

After the War it was operated more as a menagerie than an aquarium, and even hosted popular chimpanzee tea parties.

Sea Life’s arrival in 1991 heralded the installation of many high-tech’ state-of-the-art display tanks such as the waist-high ray pool teeming with native ray species, flatfish and gurnards among others.

Merlin has invested year-on-year in new creatures and new feature displays focusing on species as diverse as crabs, seahorses and octopuses.

“It is marvellous to see the old place looking so pristine again,” said Max, “but we are all itching to add the final, vital ingredient, namely lots of smiling, enthralled visitors discovering just how magical the marine world can be.”

Without doubt, one of the most fresh and original voices operating on the contemporary jazz scene today. The Magdalena Reising and The Blue Cafe Jazz is a unique and enchanting blend of Scottish folk, Polish melodies and tin pan alley jazz standards and haunting originals. Featuring the captivating vocals and stunning jazz harp of Magdalena, each performance takes the audience on a dramatic and spiritual journey from the Highlands of Scotland to the shores of the Baltic. Accompanying her are two of the best improvising musicians in the UK, Terry Seabrook on piano and Steve Thompson on double bass, each capable of holding an audience spellbound. At the centre of the band are the bewitching vocals of Magdalena Reising that evoke Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald but in the end are as individual, fresh and original as the band accompanying her.
Tickets £29.95 from Reception. Tables of 6 – 12 people.
Tables of less than 6 people will be seated with other groups.

A rather unusual theft occurred today at the Children’s Parade when a giant puppet of a Regency gentleman was stolen. Same Sky, the community arts charity that organise the Brighton Festival Children’s Parade, is requesting for help to get him back.
The 3-meter high figure, who the group have named “Percy”, is holding a book and wearing full regency dress, including a waistcoat made from a map of the world, and a top hat.
Percy was made by Same Sky community artist, Jo Coles, especially for the Children’s Parade. Jo spent two weeks making him from willow sticks, newsprint and domestic paint.

Jo said: “We’re very upset and terribly worried about him. He’s a gentle soul – a romantic and a scholar – and really shouldn’t be out in Brighton on a Saturday night. He needs looking after.” Because of his height, Jo is worried that someone will leave him outside, possibly in a garden. “He won’t survive being outside for any amount of time and will fall apart if he gets wet.”

Jo, who describes herself as an artist-maker, has been crafting puppets for Brighton-based charity Same Sky and the Children’s Parade for many years and admits that she was particularly fond of Percy.
The over-sized dandy was taken from underneath the Arches on Madeira Drive as Same Sky’s crew were clearing up after the parade. The team believe that someone must have spotted, or maybe even photographed, him being taken.
Same Sky have been organising the Children’s Parade since 1989 and over the years have seen it grow from 60 children and five schools to over 5,000 young people from 77 schools. The charity works with communities to create exciting and affordable arts events.
Jo added: “There’s a reward for returning him – a bundle of sticks and some newsprint so that the thieves can make their own Percy!”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Same Sky at info@samesky.co.uk
