Guest Director – Vanessa Redgrave

Vanessa Redgrave, stage, screen and television actress, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 1995, member of Liberty, of Amnesty International, and a longstanding member/supporter of Memorial and Za Prava Cheloveka, the two chief Russian Human Rights NGOs, brings her passion to Brighton Festival as Guest Director of the 46th three-week celebration which takes place from 5 – 27 May 2012.

Over the three weeks we explore many of her interests which permeate the wide-ranging programme across music, theatre, dance, film, literature and from acting and politics to memory and nostalgia to homeland and story-telling, to humanitarian concerns and economic and social issues including those of the various charities she represents and in particular children’s needs in our world.

HOUSE Festival 2012

Working in and beyond the gallery walls, HOUSE 2012 presents a carefully curated exhibition of international artist
David Batchelor’s work, alongside 5 new commissioning opportunities developed by HOUSE. Collectively, these projects artists will make interventions on the streets of Brighton over the month of May, exploring themes of domesticity, the urban and everyday, bringing attention to the overlooked and ordinary. Artwork will be positioned in independent galleries, domestic spaces, artist studios and unexpected locations across Brighton & Hove.
Internationally and critically acclaimed British artist David Batchelor is lead artist for HOUSE 2012 and will exhibit his largest presentation of artwork in this country yet, with several new commissions, including a major new cocommission in conjunction with Brighton Festival. Fittingly for a vibrant coastal town, Batchelor is primarily concerned with colour within the urban environment. For HOUSE 2012 he draws connections between Sicilian street festival decoration and the vernacular of Brighton’s infamous Regency architecture.

Me, Marionette – Graham Carter at Ink_d Gallery

For the Brighton Festival Fringe, ink_d is proud to present long-awaited solo show Me, Marionette, by Graham Carter.

Graham Carter is a leading UK illustrator and printmaker, whose clients include Bupa, Orange, Waterstones, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Independent, Penguin books and the list goes on. He has become a commercially recognised and highly collectable artist, and whether you are an ardent fan or you’re new to Graham’s world, the show will be a visual feast.

The artist is assuming the role of Geppetto, the creator of Pinocchio and creating a magical world of characters, from warriors to explorers, and astronauts to yetis.

The gallery will be transformed in to a unique world with original artwork as well as exquisite new prints, and there will be something for everyone including the premiere of his much awaited debut animation. The animation has been created in collaboration with Ticktockrobot and brings Graham’s work to life as never before.

We invite you to come and immerse yourself in this wonderful show, and to meet his spectacular 10ft yeti rod puppet as it ventures out of the gallery to meet and greet the public on the streets of Brighton.

My Favourite Toy exhibition at Hove Museum

Everyone has a favourite toy. They inspire our imaginations and our play, and in later years hold cherished memories and make us nostalgic for times gone by. This family friendly exhibition at Hove Museum & Art Gallery celebrates toys of all kinds from across the eras.

On display will be toys from Hove Museum’s very own Wizard’s Attic gallery along with some popular favourites and others that have not been loved for some time!

Children and young people from Brighton & Hove have helped to curate the exhibition with exciting displays of their own favourite toys.
