East Sussex’s own artists and makers will take central stage at Towner this weekend, as the award-winning contemporary art museum launches the third East Sussex Open – the popular annual exhibition which showcases the wealth of regional artistic talent on our doorstep.
Joining Towner’s Exhibitions Curator Sanna Moore on the 2012 selection panel were Jane Won, Curator at the De La Warr Pavilion, and Matthew Burrows, Sussex-based artist and John Moores Painting Prize winner. An impressive 160 entries were put forward to be judged by the panel, and 33 emerging and established East Sussex artists were selected to be part of the exhibition.
The East Sussex Open will fill Towner’s industrial scale Exhibition Halls, with a floor space of 668 sq m – the largest art display space in the region.
As in previous years, each piece of work in the exhibition is for sale and Towner is very pleased to now offer the opportunity to buy through the Own Art scheme – an interest-free art purchasing scheme that makes buying art easy and affordable for everyone.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Councillor Neil Stanley said “Excitement is building as the East Sussex Open prepares to take over our Exhibition Halls for the third year – we are delighted to be able to once again devote such a huge space to the talents of our local artistic community. The range and quality of artwork in this show is so inspiring and reminds us that you don’t have to look far to experience great art!
“In fact, you may find yourself so inspired that you’d like to own one of the pieces for yourself – and now that Towner is part of the Own Art scheme, we can all be art collectors! Whether you’d like to buy some art or not, this exhibition is an absolute must-see.”
Last year’s East Sussex Open included the largest painting ever exhibited at Towner and this year’s exhibition promises another eclectic selection of visual art in every medium, including large scale sculptures and a video installation showing iconic landmarks along the South coast from a swimmer’s perspective. Don’t miss the toilet sculpture made entirely from chocolate!
