Fruiting Bodies at The Restaurant at Drakes, Drakes Hotel, Brighton from September 3rd 2010

An Alternative Process… Photography comes from the greek photos , light, and graphos, writing, delineation, or painting. Hence light writing, light painting, or recording with light. These images are created without re- course to a camera. The initial image capture is achieved digitally by placing the fungi on a scanner and scanning them. The scanner replaces the camera as recording device. This is related to previous and ongoing work with silver based and digital camera-less photography. The giclee prints are made using archival quality inks & papers. Fruiting Bodies The initial impetus for this series of images was the richness and diversity of form in the fruiting bodies of funghi and the sense of the hidden revealed in their sudden appearance. The paradox of what is revealed intimating much that remains hidden, beyond the visible and physical, became manifest as I worked. The myths and mystery that traditionally surround these fruiting bodies are echoed in this apprehension of an ever unfolding universe, a microcosm that reflects the macro- cosm.

the restaurant at Drakes Nestled inside Brighton’s finest designer hotel, “the restaurant at Drakes” is comparably stylish and reflects a sense of relaxed glamour. The chic rich tones of the restaurant, with the exposed brickwork and subtle lighting create an elegant but unpretentious backdrop for low-key lunches and intimate dinners. Through the skills and talents of renowned head chef Andrew MacKenzie and his team, the 2 AA Rosette restaurant received the highest score of all Brighton restaurants in this year’s Good Food Guide. Exquisite Modern European cuisine, combining the highest quality seasonal ingredients, cre- ates clean and robust flavours which characterise the restaurant’s dishes. The Wine List comprises a fabulous selection of Old and New World Wines and is currently in the running to win the “Best Small List” category in the inaugural Louis Roederer UK Competition “Wine List of the Year”.
