Barbara Windsor lookalike is charity winner for Rockinghorse Children’s Charity

Rockinghorse Children’s Charity has found a winner for its British icon lookalike competition, which it ran throughout August.

Winner Carol Dee, from Hove, shares a striking resemblance to Carry On and Eastenders star Barbara Windsor MBE and fielded tough competition from a Kate Middleton lookalike, as well as latest 007 agent Daniel Craig and others.

Carol took part in a photo shoot with outstanding local photographer, Jim Holden, to help promote the charity’s Cool Britannia themed ball and has also won two tickets to the prestigious event in November.

She said: “I’ve lived in Hove for five years and I’ve always been aware of the work Rockinghorse does throughout the area. I was very pleased to hear I’d won the competition and the photo shoot was really good fun!

“I’m looking forward to the ball and it’s great to know that the money raised on the evening goes towards helping sick and disabled children in the area.”

The Rockinghorse Ball, which is sponsored by Skerritts Wealth Management, takes place on Saturday 19 November at The Hilton Brighton Metropole and will feature all that is great about Britain, including iconic music, British food, classic anthems and the charity’s infamous dodgems.

Auction and raffle prizes on the evening include an emerald diamond cluster necklace from Gold Arts, a Union Jack Aspinal bag, use of a Bentley for the weekend courtesy of Harwoods and a number of luxury holidays.

Allie Polhill, event organiser at Rockinghorse, said: “We had some great entries but Carol won hands down – we were blown away with how much she looked like Barbara! And the fact that Barbara Windsor is such a recognisable British icon made it even more perfect. Thanks to everyone who entered – we really appreciate the support.”

Tickets to the ball cost £90 per person or £850 for a table of ten. To book or for more information about the event, call Allie on 01273 330044 or visit www.rockinghorse.org.uk/events

Gathering by Melanie Manchot at Fabrica

October 8, 2011toNovember 27, 2011

This autumn Fabrica are delighted to present two films by artist Melanie Manchot. The exhibition, Gathering, will feature new work Walk (Square) and 2010’s Celebration (Cyprus Street).

In Walk (Square) a thousand schoolchildren stream out of their school gates and become part of a vast choreographed crowd in the square outside the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. For Celebration (Cyprus Street) Manchot worked with the residents of Cyprus Street in the East End of London and the resulting film is a continuous tracking shot that records a community coming together and posing for a traditional group photograph.

Melanie Manchot worked with the participants of both films to construct and record incidents that examine collective identities, codes of behaviour in public space and develop her continued interest in portraiture as a performative event. The films also express Manchot’s interest in walking as a form of democratic expression, to parade or to protest, and resonate with the wave of mass demonstrations that have swept across Europe and the Middle East from anti-cuts protests in the UK, to the Arab Spring.

Legitimate protest or riot? Street party or demonstration? The politics of the mob or the genuine voice of the people? Gathering promises to be the focus for a highly topical debate on the power of human action directed to a common goal.

A full programme of events and activities will sit alongside the exhibition. Full details http://fabrica.org.uk

Missum – Place – Works on Paper at Ink_d Gallery

October 21, 2011toNovember 20, 2011

Missum is one half of the artist collective Miss Bugs. This unique artistic partnership, founded in 2007, has produced a body of work that has achieved international acclaim, and developed a passionate home-grown following. In early 2011, Missum began to explore her own individual aesthetic. Departing from the kinetic, graphically led collage style that had become synonymous with the work of Miss Bugs, Missum’s focus addresses a more traditional method of printing. This new approach which incorporates the use of watercolours, collograph and drypoint etching, has given the artist’s work a darker edge that imparts a more feminine, softer tone. In these pieces, the artist can be seen to be developing her mark-making, whilst also addressing new themes and preoccupations. The work resonates feelings of isolation and loss whilst the delicately dark, sombre palette draws the viewer into an unforgiving landscape.

Around 15 new original artworks will be unveiled at ink_d.
