Brighton Photo Fringe is a vibrant event that engages with photographers, lens-based artists and a diverse public audience. Every two years Brighton Photo Fringe coordinates a city-wide festival of exhibitions and events in partnership with Brighton Photo Biennial.
This October Brighton Photo Fringe returns with its largest festival to date. Continuing to grow and expand, this year’s festival includes over 130 exhibitions, projects and events, spreading as far as Hastings and Chichester. New for 2010 are major national and international projects, including groups from Belfast, Liverpool and Africa.
Integral to Brighton Photo Fringe is a programme of events, workshops and activities that create opportunities for everyone to participate.

Nothing is in the Place is a subjective survey that remembers life in 1990’s Britain. The show is an introduction to some of the photography that was made at that time offering glimpses of political unrest, social upheaval and analogue youth culture. Everyday lows jostle with esoteric highs to create a compulsive parade. The show is presented in a modular, editorial style and the photographers featured generously allowed the curator to make new versions of their work, often very different from the original contexts and formats intended for the images.

Uprooting the Gaze: foreign places familiar patterns features five African photographers: Nestor Da, François-Xavier Gbré, Baudouin Mouanda, Zanele Muholi and Uche Okpa-Iroha, nominated for the Fondation Blachère Prize at the 8th Bamako Encounters – African Photography Biennial 09, and one multimedia artist Breeze Yoko, shortlisted for the same prize at the 8th Dak’Art – Biennale of Contemporary African Art 08. Curated by Christine Eyene, this show proposes to highlight the photographers’ gaze and visual response in a situation of temporary (dis)location, a context of passing and ephemeral presence. Underlying the concept of this exhibition is a questioning of accepted definitions of the term “African photography” as a practice that could be defined by, and contained within, and enclosed geographical space.
CLOSER Stuart Griffiths 2 Oct – 14 Nov Phoenix Brighton, 10–14 Waterloo Place, Brighton, BN2 9NB
Brighton Photo Fringe and Phoenix Brighton present Closer, an exhibition of photographs by Stuart Griffiths. This exhibition was selected from over 200 submissions to the Brighton Photo Fringe OPEN 2010 by Charlotte Cotton, Martin Parr and Val Williams. Closer is Griffiths’ first solo exhibition and includes two bodies of photographs: the first produced between 2003-2008, the second during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Griffiths began taking photographs when he was a young soldier and this exhibition explores his personal feelings towards war and conflict.

The work in this exhibition explores a number of housing estates across Britain that have fallen into decline and are now earmarked for regeneration. It poses questions about the demise and degeneration of social housing and the effect this has, not only on the communities who inhabit them, but also on society as a whole.
EXPERIMENTS IN BLACK Lotta Antonsson 2 Oct – 14 Nov The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Hove, BN3 1EH
Permanent presents Experiments in Black at The Regency Town House, an installation incorporating photography, collage and found objects. Antonsson uses a collage technique often reinterpreting social, political and artistic movements throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with a particular focus on the relationship of photography to identity and representation. The installation will be created specifically in response to the restoration project which is currently in progress at The Regency Town House and will elaborate on the visible traces of the house’s previous occupants.
LEWIS’S FIFTH FLOOR: A DEPARTMENT STORY Stephen King 2 Oct – 17 Oct Fringe Focus, The Old Co-op Building, 94–101 London Rd, Brighton, BN1 4LB
The fifth floor of Lewis’s Department Store was once the place to go in Liverpool to experience luxurious shopping, fine dining and pampering. After being closed to the public for 30 years, it remained a space frozen in time. Stephen King spent several months creating a series of still lives and portraits of staff, from this vast forgotten floor that told of past opulence and glamour, through a veil of neglect.
MAGGIE & THE ELECTION PROJECT Lisa Barnard & Simon Roberts 2 Oct – 14 Nov Fringe Focus, The Old Co-op Building, 94-101 London Rd, Brighton, BN1 4LB
While photographing the old conservative party headquarters at 32 Smiths Square, London, Lisa Barnard discovered a series of ‘snapshot’ portraits of Margaret Thatcher in a drawer. This exhibition presents large light-box versions of these portraits that had become stuck together, the photographic chemicals beginning to corrode her image.
Simon Roberts was selected as the nation’s official Election Artist to document the campaign activity in the run up to the 2010 General Election. The artwork was Simon’s own interpretation of the event and this is the first public exhibition of the work.

An exhibition of photographic and video work that focuses on a range of silent interiors, and the connotations of absence that they carry. The work, as a response to those spaces, is both eclectic and varied, deploying a wide range of photographic strategies. With their different qualities of silence and their various subliminal messages and subtle allusions to the implications of those silences, these images openly invite viewers to excavate their particular and uniquely specific messages.
STATES OF AMERICA Michael Ormerod

The first exhibition in nearly a decade for one of British photography’s most powerful and distinctive voices whose career was tragically cut short in a road accident in 1991. Fascinated by the American image, Ormerod took to the Mid-West to find a land where the American Dream had turned sour. His images capture a strange juxtaposition of an American beauty tainted by a hidden sense of menace and corruption. States of America was published shortly after he died.
THE MILLER AND THE SWEEP Susanne Bürner Until 10 Oct • Permanent gallery & bookshop, 20 Bedford Place, Brighton, BN1 2PT
Susanne Bürner presents a slide show installation referencing early cinema, and its specific history in Brighton & Hove. The slide show will feature photographic images of the naturally occurring shadows from the city’s promenades, creating a portrait of a place through the shadows of its inhabitants. This exhibition is realised through Platform X, a series of short residencies held in Permanent’s gallery space throughout 2010.

Street photography can hold a mirror up to society, recording street culture in a particular time and place or capturing intimate human moments and gestures. The results can be honest, suspect, ironic, insightful and poetic. On Brighton’s seafront, Brown&Bri will snap people unawares before letting them decide what they do with their portrait. Not straying from traditional styles of street photography, Brown&Bri tip their hats to a respected genre while commenting on the growing restrictions on citizen photography.
LIVE IN TRANSLATION Tatsumi Orimoto Various sites within the city
Live In Translation celebrates the unique relationship Tatsumi Orimoto has developed with the medium of photography which allows audiences to become participants in his artworks. Orimoto’s artworks will appear on billboards in various locations across the city, featuring the Bread Man and Art Mama. Presented by A Foundation, Liverpool.

Running alongside events in Brighton & Hove, Brighton Photo Fringe Hastings is running a series of sixteen shows from established venues such as: Lucy Bell Fine Art Photography, the Hastings Arts Forum gallery, F-ish, the Memorial Gallery, Stonesquid, Electric Palace Cinema, as well as shop windows and local bus stops.
Brighton Photo Fringe Hastings has been facilitated by the Photo Hub Group (Phg) in partnership with Brighton Photo Fringe. The Phg is a loose association of photographers working in cohort and individually as an umbrella group to promote photography in the Hastings and St Leonards area.
Hotel du Vin Brighton, in association with the Spanish Food Company brought a spectacular end to a truly memorable Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival 2010. The gala dinner was hosted within the majestic surroundings of The Dome room and featured a Spanish themed four course dinner, complete with canapés, an outstanding selection of wines poured by the people that know them best and coffee.
Course upon course arrived, each dish well thought out and a delight of flavours. The Sussex lamb got a huge thumbs up as did the vegetarian option of artichokes and very tasty hollandaise sauce. But the very best was saved until last – the cheese platter, utterly divine, as you can see from the ensuing video!
